I thought this was a cool picture. You can see where the outer crust eroded and slid down the volcano. After many hundreds of years the volcanic soil turns to dirt and can sustain plant life. There were sections of The Big Island where freshly hardened lava was black as coal and 4-5 feet thick. Nothing will grow there for years.
