A late afternoon excursion brought us just outside Rome to the Tivoli fountains. All the fountains in Tivoli, and most of Rome for that matter, do not use modern-day pumps, but rather are designed so that water flowing down an incline feed the water jets. The Romans are master hydro-engineers.
